We're progressing a secured pipeline of 1,018MW of offshore wind in the Netherlands.
With our joint venture partners and APG (acting on behalf of Dutch pension fund ABP), we’re progressing the pre-developed and fully consented 2GW (SSE share 50%) Alpha offshore wind project in the IJmuiden Ver Wind Farm Zone in Dutch North Sea waters.
The project marks SSE’s first seabed award in the established Dutch offshore wind market where we see significant and sustainable growth potential. The Netherlands represents a complementary and adjacent market to our existing North Sea offshore projects, with an established supply chain and a mature corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) market.
The 2GW IJmuiden Ver Alpha project (SSE share 1GW) grows our secured offshore wind pipeline to 9.3GW and further progresses our ambition to grow our offshore wind business into carefully selected markets.
A 2GW offshore wind project in Dutch North Sea with focus on ecology
We’re working with our partners APG to progress the pre-developed and fully consented 2GW IJmuiden Ver Alpha project, located about 62 kilometers off the Dutch coast off the port town of Ijmuiden, towards a final investment decision (FID) in late 2025.
If approved for delivery, the offshore wind project would be constructed by SSE Renewables on behalf of the SSE-APG consortium and could be operational by the end of the decade, helping contribute to the Dutch Government’s target of 21GW of offshore wind by 2032, and a 50GW target by 2040.
It is estimated the wind farm could be capable of generating enough offshore wind energy annually to meet around 7% of the current Dutch electricity demand.
The project is unique as it is designed to make a positive contribution to nature, a key requirement for the seabed site under the Dutch Government’s competitive tender process for the IJmuiden Ver Wind Farm Zone.
Our consortium has proposed a compelling set of innovative and diverse proposals to reduce and mitigate the project’s ecological impacts while increasing biodiversity. These will help ensure our proposed offshore wind project can be delivered in a manner which will positively contribute to the marine environment while delivering a cleaner and more secure energy system for the Netherlands.
