SSE plans new visitor centre

03 May 2013

SSE has lodged outline plans for a new visitor facility at the hydro-electric power station and dam in Pitlochry, Perthshire.

The proposed centre could double existing visitor numbers to the popular Highland Perthshire tourism hot-spot to 100,000 visitors a year.

A recent independent review concluded that the existing visitor attraction at the power station and dam was no longer suitable.

Gillian O’Reilly, SSE’s Head of Community Development, explained: “An independent review found that substantial investment would be required to update the centre to modern standards. In addition, the site is part of an operational power station and has a number of access restrictions which would be challenging to overcome.

“As the town of Pitlochry has been a long and loyal supporter of hydro generation, and in recognition of the number of people who visit our dam and fish ladder each year, we were keen to look into alternative options for our visitors.

“These plans are at a very early stage and will require us to undertake further investigation and consultation with the local community. However we are excited about the prospects of this potential new site and we hope to bring further news in the coming months”.
