In a major bounce for Premier League basketball in the West of Ireland, SSE Renewables, Ireland’s leading green energy developer, has been unveiled as the official sponsor of the Moycullen Men’s Premier Basketball Team for the 2013/‘14 Season.
Following this announcement, the club’s elite squad will be known as SSE Renewables Moycullen in the newly rebranded Premier League.
The sponsorship was announced at the Season Launch of Moycullen Basketball held this week.
SSE Renewables is Ireland’s No.1 green energy developer. The green energy generated at wind farms developed by SSE Renewables powers Airtricity, Ireland’s greenest home energy provider.
SSE Renewables is currently developing the 169MW Galway Wind Park in Cloosh Valley, near Rosscahill, Co. Galway. Due to go into construction next year, Galway Wind Park will be Ireland’s premier wind farm and will generate enough green wind energy to power around 85,000 homes – that’s almost enough green energy to power every home in Galway city and county*.
Moycullen Basketball, which has players of both sexes and of all ages and abilities, was named “Club of the Year” by Basketball Ireland for the third time in 2012. Deeply rooted in the community, it is the only West of Ireland club to boast a squad competing at the top level of men’s basketball in Ireland.
Unveiling SSE Renewables as official Men’s Premier League Team sponsor Haulie Dowd, Chairman of Moycullen Basketball, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming SSE Renewables as the new power behind Moycullen Men’s Premier Basketball Team. Funding our flagship team takes a significant amount of money each season. This season is no different and indeed we have had some extra pressures. Without the support of SSE Renewables we would find it almost impossible to have a team compete at the top level with all the benefits that has for every team in the club, so we’re delighted to have SSE Renewables involved.”
John O’Sullivan, SSE Renewables Development Project Manager, said the company is extremely proud to be the new power behind Moycullen Basketball’s Men’s Premier League Team.
“SSE Renewables and our sister company Airtricity have proud track records of supporting local communities and sports at all levels, and we already enjoy strong local links with communities here in Co. Galway. Our Galway Wind Park will be Ireland’s premier wind farm when it is completed so we believe it is absolutely fitting that we should partner with Moycullen Basketball to sponsor Ireland’s premier basketball team.
“We are very excited about the forthcoming season. We’re looking forward to putting our energy behind SSE Renewables Moycullen all the way this season and to supporting the club’s administrators, volunteers and fans as well.”
As well as its sponsorship of Moycullen Basketball, SSE Renewables is a proud community sponsor in Co. Galway through its ongoing support for groups including Killanin and Oughterard GAA, Corrib Running Club, Oughterard FC, and Cancer Care West’s Great Spin Out West, among others.
