Foyle AC's Keith Shiels powered to victory at the SSE Renewables sponsored Eskra 10k Rudolph Run, which has been hailed a huge success after alarge turnout of over 300 turned out for this popular annual festive event.
Following up on last year's 2nd place, Keith Shiels ran a perfect race to clinch this year's title in a time of 32:22. He was followed in 2nd place by Annadale Strider's Glenn Phair in a time of 33:03. Third place was taken by Stephen Prentice from Enniskillen RC in a time of 34:08.
The ladies open race was won by Pauline McGurren, Sperrin Harriers, in 39:53. Local lady, Grainne Kelly from Knockmany Runners followed up with a time of 42:20 and Omagh Harrier, Deirdre Haigney took 3rd place in 42:43.
Omagh Harriers Juniors were very much to the fore in the 5k event, taking the top three places in both the male & female under-18 category – Jack O’Neill & Toni Moore winning their respective categories. The 5k open winners were Conor Moore & Patricia McKenna.
The new 'Team Event' proved to be a great attraction with 15 teams entering, although only seven teams managed to get the required minimum of four over the finish line. The men’s team event was won by Enniskillen RC in 02:19:24. The ladies event was won by Omagh Harriers Ladies in 03:15:00.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers – Knockmany Running Club – Race Director Conor McCarroll said;
“Once again the big effort by the organising team has led to another successful event. Our new main sponsor – SSE Renewables, along with the ongoing support of local businesses has helped us invest in the race, in order to benefit the athletes and the local community. The large turnout, with increased numbers this year, is testament to the contributions from everyone involved and we thank them for their efforts”.
Speaking at the finishing line, Bronagh Gormley, Community Liaison Officer for SSE Renewables, the main sponsor for the event, said:
“SSE Renewables are hugely proud to be involved in such a successful event today, to show our commitment to supporting the communities that we operate it and events that show the very best of the local community. All those involved, from runners and stewards and volunteers, created a great atmosphere, and it is a credit to all those involved in the organisation of this event.
“Congratulations in particular should go to the winners, Keith Shiels and Pauline McGurren. SSE Renewables would like to congratulate all those who took part, hoping that none of them ‘hit the wall’, and we look forward to seeing them, and more, next year.”
Proceeds from this year’s Rudolph Run go to St Patrick’s Primary School, Eskra Community Association and the Philippines Disaster Relief Fund.
