SSE Renewables, Northern Ireland’s largest renewable energy generator, has undertaken a one year sponsorship of the St Matthew’s GAC senior football and camogie teams.
St. Matthew’s, based in Drumsurn, will be hoping their new sponsors can provide the energy needed to power them up the league table next season. The club currently fields teams from under 8’s all the way up to senior level in both camogie and football. St. Matthew’s enjoyed some success last season with the under-14 boys lifting the ‘C’ trophy, while the under-16’s reached the final of their championship.
The sponsorship continues SSE’s support for communities local to its wind farms. The 20 turbine Glenconway Wind Farm near Limavady recently hit full power, completing the Slieve Kirk Cluster, Northern Ireland’s first grouped wind farm development. Since the construction at Slieve Kirk began, SSE has placed a large emphasis on stimulating the local economy, committing to an investment of £35 million over the next 25 years.
SSE Estates Manager Ireland, Donal Gormley commented on the company’s commitment to supporting local clubs:
“It’s always fantastic to see young people involved in sport, and at SSE we understand the importance of these clubs to their communities. We are committed to supporting teams in the local area, and we are delighted to be sponsoring a vibrant local club like St. Matthew’s in Drumsurn.”
SSE has been involved in a number of other sponsorships in the county over the last 12 months, including the SSE Renewables Walled City Marathon, which formed part of this year’s City of Culture Celebrations.
