Fort Augustus Community visits 100MW Glendoe hydro electric scheme

14 Jul 2014

Members of the Fort Augustus community recently enjoyed a guided tour of SSE’s 100MW Glendoe hydro electric scheme in the Scottish Highlands.

The community initially visited Glendoe’s underground power station in October 2012 as part of a public open day. Another visit, to the dam this time, was unfortunately cancelled in summer 2013 due to poor weather but thankfully the group was blessed with better weather this year.

Tommy Gibson, Northern Hydro Group Manager, said: “We were delighted to welcome local people from Fort Augustus to Glendoe.

“The station generates a lot of public interest and as a responsible company we try to grant as many visit requests as we can. We’ve held a number of open days to give the public a chance to see the scheme up close and very few leave unimpressed.”

Stuart Findlay, Chair of Fort Augustus Community Council, said: “I would like to thank SSE for facilitating what was a really enjoyable visit to the Dam at Glendoe. We’ve been interested in going up for a while now and everyone was delighted with the tour."

Located six miles south east of Fort Augustus, Glendoe’s main operational feature is that it is able to start generating electricity at full capacity in just 90 seconds. As a result its helps to meet changes in demand and provide flexible balancing power for the grid.
