Pupils enjoy dizzy heights of Griffin Wind Farm

15 Jun 2015

A group of around 60 nursery and primary one children from The Royal School of Dunkeld recently enjoyed a behind the scenes look at SSE’S Griffin Wind Farm during their special naming ceremony.

The visit followed a talk at the school by SSE who challenged the children to come up with a name for one of the turbines at Griffin.

The children enjoyed listening to a talk about the wildlife that lived on the wind farm and were treated to a guided tour of the site by SSE staff before the special unveiling of the name took place. The children were very excited to discover that Finn had chosen the winning name ‘Dizzy’. “That’s a great name because when you spin round and round like the blades you get dizzy,” one child commented.

Lyn Williamson from The Royal School of Dunkeld said: “I would like to thank all the staff involved in making our visit so exciting and interesting. The children loved it and were really surprised when the name was unveiled. Most importantly they learned about their local environment, discovered more about how electricity can be generated from wind and why safety is so important.

David Fraser, Senior Operations Supervisor at the site, said: “The team at Griffin absolutely love days like these, when we can welcome the community onto the site, especially such enthusiastic young children. We get a variety of animals on the site so I think some of the children particularly enjoyed the wildlife spotting element on the tour.

“As a responsible community member, SSE is happy to help facilitate these types of school trips where possible and on personal level I don’t ever remember getting such interesting field trips during my time at school, so I was eager to help out.”
