From 15-17 September, nearly 30 SSE Airtricity staff members cycled over 300km across Ulster in an effort to raise €25,000 (£18,000) for local charities, including Marie Curie NI, the Irish Cancer Society, and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
The SSE Tour of Ulster took the cyclists along a mountainous 300km route, from SSE’s Gartnaneane Wind Farm in County Cavan to the company’s Slieve Kirk Wind Park in County Derry~Londonderry, passing a number of other wind farms and landmarks along the way.
In total, the participants pedalled more than 6,000km or 3,750 miles over the three days, which is equivalent to cycling between Slieve Kirk Wind Park in Derry~Londonderry and SSE’s Coomacheo and Curragh Wind Farms in Cork more than 11 times.
SSE Tour of Ulster organiser and participant, Pat Tierney, said: “From start to finish, it was a challenging but overwhelmingly enjoyable journey. We set out to raise vital funds for local charities and promote health and wellbeing in the workplace. I think we achieved our aims and we had a lot of fun at the same time."
Tour participant, Dónal Gormley, commented: “The three days were an absolute pleasure. It was tough going, but we got lucky with the weather, and I think the camaraderie within the team helped everyone over the line. It was a fantastic experience and more importantly we raised much needed funding for a number of worthy causes.”
The SSE Tour of Ulster has so far raised over €20,000 (£12,500) for charity and there is still time to help the team reach their target using this link.
