Dunmaglass turbines to make their journey

03 May 2016

The turbine deliveries at SSE’s Dunmaglass wind farm will start on Monday 9 May 2016.

The route for the turbine blades and tower section deliveries will begin at the Harbour in Inverness.  From the Longman Roundabout they will continue on to the A9 until reaching the junction of the B851 where they will turn off and travel along the B851 to the site.

These will be delivered between Monday and Saturday each week under police escort and are expected to comprise of a maximum of three deliveries each day with two components in each convoy.  These abnormal loads are likely to leave the harbour at 9am, 3.30pm and 6pm each delivery day, although these times are subject to change at short notice.

The turbine nacelle is being transported by road from Holland and will also require a police escort.  This is expected to begin to travel along the B851 around mid-afternoon each delivery day.

Details for this have been agreed with Highland Council, Police Scotland and Transport Scotland. Transport Scotland has liaised with all the statutory consultees including the local council roads department prior to the issue of a permit.

All other components, including the turbine hub, switchgear and other ancillary parts will be delivered by HGV throughout the week and should not cause disruption to the local road network.

Jamie Meneely, Project Manager for SSE, said: “This marks a significant milestone in the Dunmaglass project and we are looking forward to beginning erecting the turbines in the coming weeks.

“Although the escorted delivery vehicles will be slow moving, the police will ensure that these are done safely and with the minimum of disruption to other road users.  The turbine deliveries will take place throughout May, June, July and into August and we are expecting to commission the site early next year.”
