SSE Airtricity invites people to run like the wind for Blood Bike Mid West
30 May 2016
SSE Airtricity, Ireland’s largest green energy provider, is inviting the public to take part in its Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farms Run in Templeglantine, Co. Limerick on Saturday 18th June. All proceeds from the event will go to local charity, Blood Bike Mid West.
There are two distances for participants to choose from this year, with a new 10k route available in addition to the 5k course from last year’s event. Participants can decide to run or walk the 5k track, while the 10k race is an option for runners looking for a greater challenge. The event is AAI permitted.
Both courses will take participants along a scenic route between SSE Airtricity’s Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farms in West Limerick. SSE Airtricity has a total of four wind farms in the region, which have a combined capacity of over 100MW and supply greener and cleaner energy to around 50,000 homes.
Blood Bike Mid West is a charitable organisation based in Limerick and operating primarily in the Mid West region. It runs an out-of-hours service using volunteer motorcyclists to transport urgently needed blood, breast milk, patient records, drugs and other medical requirements between hospitals, hospices, clinics and blood transfusion banks.
The SSE Airtricity staff organising the event on the day will be donating their time through the company’s Be the Difference programme. The programme gives every SSE Airtricity employee the opportunity to take a day out of their usual schedule to volunteer for a charity or community event of their choice.
Tournafulla and Rathcahill Site Operator, Sean Carter, said:
“We’re really looking forward to this year’s Wind Farms Run, which promises to be even bigger and better than last year, with the introduction of a 10k run for those who want to challenge themselves further. Blood Bike Mid West is a fantastic facility for the local area, and we’re hoping for a big turnout to raise vital funds for its continued development. The event was a great success last year and we’re expecting it to be a lot of fun again this time around.”
Ken Driscoll from Blood Bike Mid West commented:
“We’re delighted to be the nominated charity for this year’s SSE Airtricity 5k & 10k Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farms Run. Like SSE Airtricity, we endeavour to make a positive difference in our local communities. Our volunteers work out of hours, often at night, when most people are in their beds. This means that their fantastic contribution to the health care system often goes unnoticed, so we are truly honoured and very grateful to be chosen by SSE Airtricity. It’s important to say that 100% of all funds raised on the day will go directly towards keeping up this life-saving service. Remember our next ride could be for you.”
The SSE Airtricity 5k & 10k Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farms Run will kick off at 11am on Saturday 18th June. Participants should register on the day from 10am and there will be a free race
t-shirt for the first 300 entries.
Entry: 10k - €15; 5K - €10 (or €20 family entry)
