Galway Wind Park team wins Excellence in Sustainability award

08 Jun 2016

The Galway Wind Park Delivery Team, consisting of SSE, Coillte and Roadbridge, scooped the award for Excellence in Sustainability at the 2016 Irish Construction Industry Awards last week.

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday 2 June at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Dublin, with over 500 industry professionals in attendance.

Now in their third year, the Irish Construction Industry Awards are designed to recognise, encourage and celebrate original and innovative contractors, businesses, teams, consultants and projects that demonstrate excellence in the built environment.

When complete, SSE and Coillte’s Galway Wind Park will be Ireland’s largest wind farm. With up to 69 turbines and a total export capacity of 169MW, it will produce enough green energy to power around 84,000 homes, equivalent to roughly 90% of the homes in Co. Galway. Construction of the wind farm is due to be completed by Autumn 2017.

James O’Hara, SSE’s Project Manager for Galway Wind Park, commented: “We’re delighted to win this award for Excellence in Sustainability. The delivery of Galway Wind Park is a real team effort between ourselves, our joint venture partners Coillte, and the principal contractor Roadbridge. The team is committed to sustainability, both in terms of environmental standards and responsibility to the local communities. We had a great night at the Irish Construction Industry Awards and I would like to congratulate all of the other winners and all those shortlisted."

The Galway Wind Park Delivery Team was also shortlisted for the Green Construction Award at the event.

In April, the team was a finalist at the Green Awards in the Green Project of the Year category.
