SSE Airtricity, Northern Ireland’s leading renewable energy provider, is working with the Odyssey Trust to develop a solar photo-voltaic array on the roof of the Odyssey Complex, home to The SSE Arena, Belfast.

The 1,400-panel array, which is currently being installed, will cover an area of more than 2,300m2 – that’s equivalent to 12 tennis courts!

When completed this March, the 420 kilowatt peak (kWp) development will generate enough renewable energy from the sun to offset roughly 200 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions annually.

As naming rights sponsor to The SSE Arena, Belfast since 2015, and Education Partner of the adjacent W5 Science and Discovery Centre, SSE Airtricity also works with the Odyssey Trust to help manage its energy costs and carbon emissions.

SSE Airtricity already provides the entire Odyssey Complex, including The SSE Arena and W5, with 100% renewable electricity.

Brian Connolly, General Manager of SSE Airtricity Energy Services, said:

“Since we began our partnership in 2015, SSE Airtricity has been proud to provide The SSE Arena, W5, and the entire Odyssey Complex with 100% renewable electricity, while working with the Odyssey Trust to help reduce its carbon footprint.

“This new roof-mounted solar array is an exciting and innovative way for us to bring further benefits of renewable energy to the Complex. This is SSE Airtricity’s first solar photo-voltaic project in Northern Ireland and we’re delighted to be working with our partners in the Odyssey Trust to bring it to life.”
