€2000 raised for Blood Bike Mid West as all ages Run Like The Wind

17 Jun 2017

Over 120 runners of all ages took part in this year’s SSE Airtricity Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farms Run in Templeglantine, Co. Limerick on Saturday morning, 17 June. The event was part of the 2017 Global Wind Day celebrations.

With the mercury rising on the hottest weekend of the year so far, runners descended upon the rolling hills of West Limerick for the popular scenic run through SSE Airtricity’s Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farms. Participants had the option to choose between a 5k track, which they could either run or walk, or a 10k race for runners looking for an even greater challenge.

Around €2,000 is expected to have been raised for local charity Blood Bike Mid West, between entry fees on the day and additional donations. This is the second year in a row that SSE Airtricity has supported Blood Bike Mid West which provides an out-of-hours service using volunteer motorcyclists to transport urgently needed blood, breast milk, patient records, drugs and other medical requirements between hospitals, hospices, clinics and blood transfusion banks in the Mid West region.

SSE’s Tournafulla and Rathcahill Wind Farm Site Operator, Sean Carter, said:

“We’re delighted that so many runners of all ages came out to join us for this year’s Wind Farms Run. It was a brilliant day once again, with great participation and enthusiasm from the local community, even on the hottest weekend of the year! It’s fantastic that everyone is joining us to get behind this event – in doing so, we’re not only celebrating the power of wind energy in a positive and fun way, but more importantly we’re raising vital funds for Blood Bike Mid West, which is a fantastic local charity making such a positive difference to everyone in the Mid West.”

Brendan Caffrey, Director of Blood Bike Mid West, commented:

“We’re delighted to be the nominated charity for SSE Airtricity’s Wind Farms Run again this year. This year’s event was another great success and has helped to raise vital funds to help us keep our operations going.”

SSE Airtricity has a total of four wind farms in the region, which have a combined capacity of over 100MW and supply greener and cleaner energy to around 50,000 homes.
