The Government has announced a commitment to reach net zero by 2050.
SSE has supported setting this target since last year and is delighted to see firm legislation to tackle climate change being put in place.
Chief Executive Alistair Phillips-Davies said: “By becoming the first major nation to propose this target the Government has put the UK and our industry at the forefront of the transition to a low-carbon world.
“We have been calling for Net Zero since last year, this was further ratified by the Committee on Climate Change recommendations in May this year, and as a business we are already playing our part. But the hard work will now begin.
“Much needs to be done to make renewables the central plank of net zero, the electrification of heat and transport must be accelerated if targets are going to be met and the energy sector needs to invest more in developing clean back-up technologies.
“We face many challenges; but nothing worth doing is easy and the net zero mission is necessary for protecting the future of our planet. And, thanks to this momentous decision, it is also now very achievable.”
