SSE RENEWABLES PRESENTS OVER €237,000 TO COMMUNITY GROUPS IN LIMERICK AND KERRY

04 Mar 2022

Community groups in Limerick and Kerry received over €237,000 through the SSE Renewables Community Fund in 2021.

The leading developer, owner and operator of renewable energy in Ireland and the power behind leading green energy provider and sister company SSE Airtricity has announced the awards to 108 recipients.

Through its Community Fund programme, SSE Renewables makes annual contributions to local community groups located near its onshore wind farms. This latest presentation takes the company’s contribution in the West Limerick and North Kerry area to over €2.4 million in the area.

Athea National School in Co. Limerick is putting their latest funding towards air purifiers for the school.

"In an effort to ensure the safety of all children in our classrooms, ventilation had become a huge concern. Currently classroom windows and doors are continuously open regardless of weather conditions and temperatures. This year’s SSE Renewables Community funding will enable us to rectify this situation by installing an air purification system for some of our classrooms, especially the special needs classrooms."

Margaret Watters Principal of Athea National School

Tournafulla Sustainable Living Community in Co. Limerick are using the funding for solar panels to light up the local community garden.

"Tournafulla Sustainable Living’s aim is to keep our community and our area alive and viable. We have done much to accomplish this in the past, thanks to SSE Renewables community funding. This year’s funding will be used to install solar panels to light up the shed and polytunnel areas and assist with a water pump system to create a safe environment for people to work, walk and grow produce in the Community Development Living garden behind the Community Hall"

Helen Broderick Chairperson Tournafulla Sustainable Living Community

"SSE Renewables is really proud to be making a difference in the local area particularly in this difficult time for communities across West Limerick and North Kerry. We’ve been presenting communities here with funding since 2008 and this latest presentation brings our total funding in the area to over €2.4 million. Through the financial assistance of over €237,000 awarded from Athea, Dromada, Lenamore, Rathcahill and Tournafulla wind farms within the last few months 108 community groups and schools have received funding"

Anne Reynolds Community Development Officer
