Shetland young people showcase their innovation at STEM Celebration event in Lerwick
11 Jul 2023
Young people from schools across Shetland attended a recent Science Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) event organised by SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Club (YESC).
Around 85 young people attended Shetland Museum in Lerwick to compete in a variety of STEM challenges set by industry who also provided an insight into the different career paths available in the sector.
Eamon Dorris a Graduate Engineer currently working in Shetland on the Viking Wind Farm gave a well-received presentation discussing his career journey. Along with colleague Andrew James they supported young people to complete the challenge of constructing a Vestas paper turbine.
All the schools that entered received a free STEM Resource kit to take part in the Pylon Challenge to create a model that transferred renewable electricity from an offshore tidal energy turbine to homes across the islands. Darren McIntyre, Senior Electrical Engineer for SSE Renewables was on the judging panel.
The event was delivered through funding from SSE Renewables and SSEN Transmission.
"Employees from SSE Renewables had a great time at the event last month and we were really encouraged to see how many young people took part and have a keen interest in the challenge of achieving net zero. It was great to be involved in the judging of the competition as part of the day and we were impressed at the high level of entries. We hope the young people took something away from the day and would like to thank SCDI and everyone involved in the event for inviting us to be sponsors."
