SSE Renewables has announced plans to develop a proposed new onshore wind farm in County Tyrone.
The project, to be called Tattymoyle Wind Farm, would be located near to the village of Fintona in south Tyrone. If consented and approved for development, the wind farm could comprise up to ten onshore wind turbines capable of generating up to 60 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy. The project could also include a co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to store excess renewable electricity for peak demand use at time when the wind isn't blowing.
The delivery of Tattymoyle Wind Farm could contribute to the decarbonisation of Northern Ireland’s energy system, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, lowering energy bills and fighting the climate crisis. The project would be capable of producing enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of up to 64,000^ homes every year and displacing up to 48,000* metric tonnes of harmful CO2 annually from electricity generated by fossil fuels.
Ahead of submitting a planning application for the project, SSE Renewables is inviting members of the public in south Tyrone to take part in a series of in-person consultation events to be held in Fivemiletown and in Omagh on November 5 and 6 respectively, as well as a month-long online consultation beginning November 5.
"We are eager to meet with the local community and get their feedback on our plans to develop Tattymoyle Wind Farm in south Tyrone. This will be our first new wind farm project in Northern Ireland in a number of years and we are excited to be developing in this key market, in which we hope to develop more renewable energy projects in the future. Tattymoyle will bring a range of benefits and opportunities to the local community and economy through direct and indirect job creation, supporting a local supply chain, local rates and taxes paid and of course our dedicated annual Community Benefit Fund. We look forward to meeting with the local community who are an essential stakeholder for this development at our upcoming consultation events."
Anna Magee SSE Renewables Tattymoyle Project Manager
Construction of Tattymoyle Wind Farm would be expected to deliver significant economic benefits to County Tyrone and the wider region. At peak construction delivery, the project would be expected to create more than 50 roles, including the local supply chain. The wind farm would also make a significant contribution to local authority rates payments supporting essential services in the county.
Once operational, Tattymoyle Wind Farm would support a dedicated Community Benefit Fund of up to £300,000 a year. The fund would provide financial backing to a range of grassroot initiatives building sustainable communities, promoting good health and well-being, and supporting quality education including scholarships to Third Level education for local students.
SSE Renewables is one of the largest voluntary contributors of wind-powered funding to local communities in Northern Ireland. So far, the company has contributed close to £5 million in voluntary community funding from its wind farms to people-led projects in the immediate vicinity of its four operating wind farms in the North West. The potential addition of Tattymoyle Wind Farm to its portfolio would significantly increase the company’s funding potential to local groups and good causes in the region.
Public Consultation Events
SSE Renewables intends to submit a planning application for the project to the Department for Infrastructure in 2025. To support the planning application, the company has been undertaking a number of environmental surveys and assessments as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment process. These assess any potential environmental effects from the wind farm on a variety of factors including biodiversity, land and soil, water, traffic, cultural heritage, landscape and noise.
Ahead of submitting the planning application, SSE Renewables is now hosting a series of upcoming public consultation events in Fivemiletown and in Omagh for members of the local community to meet the project team, learn more about the proposals and provide feedback.
In-person consultation events will be taking place on:
- Tuesday 5 November, 4 – 7.30pm; The Valley Hotel, 60 Main Street, Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone BT75 0PW
- Wednesday 6 November, 4 – 7.30pm; Mellon Country Inn, 134 Beltany Road, Omagh, Co Tyrone BT78 5RA
A month-long online consultation will be taking place from:
- Tuesday 5 November to Friday 6 December and can be accessed via the Tattymoyle webpage from November 5th: www.sserenewables.com/tattymoyle
Feedback from this round of public consultation will help inform the next stage of project design, with a further public consultation expected to be held in the first half of next year.
Members of the SSE Renewables team will be on hand to answer questions at the information events. For more information please email SSE’s Community Liaison Team at: [email protected]
