SSE Renewables Kingsmountain and Dunneill Community Fund opens for applications

20 Jan 2025

SSE Renewables is inviting fresh applications to its Kingsmountain and Dunneill Community Fund in County Sligo.

Community groups in the region can power local change by applying to the Fund, which is open to community-based projects located within a 20km radius of the Kingsmountain and Dunneill wind farms, with preference given to projects within 5km. Applications open on Monday, 20 January and close at 5 PM on Friday, 14 February 2025.

This year, over €32,000 is available to support community-driven projects that focus on areas such as community development, energy efficiency, sustainability, climate action, and safety. Projects with a particular emphasis on energy efficiency will be awarded extra consideration, helping local communities take a leading role in the transition to a net-zero future.

Since 2004, SSE Renewables has invested over €620,000 in local initiatives through the Kingsmountain and Dunneill Community Fund. In the past year alone, €50,821 was distributed among 28 community groups, including Dromore West Central National School. The school received funding to tackle harmful waterlogging and flooding issues that affected its playground, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable environment for children.

Encouraging others to apply for this year’s fund, Ursula Langan, Principal of Dromore West Central National School, said: “The funding from SSE Renewables has made a tangible difference in creating a safer, more welcoming environment for our students. I wholeheartedly encourage other community groups to apply for this year's fund. It’s a brilliant opportunity to bring meaningful improvements to our community."

Commenting on the launch of the Fund, Anne Reynolds, SSE Renewables Community Investment Manager, said: “At SSE Renewables, we are committed to sharing the benefits of our renewable energy projects with the communities we serve. For that reason, I am delighted to open the Kingsmountain and Dunneill Community Fund for applications. It is a powerful catalyst for positive change, offering community groups the opportunity to create lasting impact while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future for the region.”
