SSE Renewables Sustainability Report 2023/2024
Our Sustainability Report discloses information on the most material economic, social and environmental impacts of SSE Renewables business activities over the reporting period of 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, unless otherwise indicated.
It includes information on key initiatives, including progress against net zero ambitions and our biodiversity net gain targets, ongoing work to ensure a just and fair energy transition and progress and performance against our key goals.
This report is complementary to the SSE plc sustainability report, which discloses additional information on behalf of the SSE plc group, of which SSE Renewables is a part.

80 Years of Hydro - Impact
SSE Renewables commissioned a report by Biggar Economics to quantify the socio-economic impact and wider social value generated by 80 years of hydro-electric power.
The report found that the capital investment in hydro over the 80-year period since 1943 is £7.5 billion, supporting over 10,000 jobs annually in Scotland including 5,519 in the Highlands and Islands.
Net Zero Transition Plan
In December 2023, we published our Net Zero Transition Plan at COP28. This document sets out our shorter-term (to 2030), medium-term (to 2035) and long-term (to 2050) science-based carbon reduction targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our operational activities, as well as scope 3 GHG emissions in our supply chain.
The Net Zero Transition Plan also outlines the headline actions we will take to address the ’hotspots’ within our business carbon footprint. This includes action to tackle greenhouse gas emissions from the fuels and materials – such as steel and concrete – used in the construction and operation of renewable energy developments.
We will report on progress against these targets and actions via our annual sustainability reports.
Positive for the Planet Report
Whilst building the clean, renewable energy developments needed to enable the planet to reach net zero, we remain committed to building in a way that is positive for the planet more broadly.
This report outlines our commitments for achieving Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and the approach we have taken to date.
Alongside the above report, we have published our two Biodiversity Net Gain Toolkits and User Guide so that others can review our approach, implement it on their own projects and we can evolve a consistent methodology for quantifying BNG together across the sector.
